Dimithri Fernando, a 13-year-old from Marawila, has shown her musical talent through her participation in the ‘Sri Lanka Festival of Music, Dance, and Speech’.
Last year, she won the All-Island title in the Religious English Solo category. This year, she took part in solo singing, piano, and a group song performance.
“Music is a big part of my life,” Dimithri says, drawing inspiration from her brothers. Besides music, she has a growing interest in foreign languages and is already learning a few.
Could you tell us about yourself?
My name is Warnakulasuriya Nimesha Dimithri Fernando, and I’m 13 years old. I live in Marawila and attend Ave Maria Convent in Negombo, where I’m currently in Grade 8.
Music is a big part of my life; I enjoy singing and playing instruments like the piano, recorder, and violin. I’m studying music at La Musica Academy under Mrs. Hiruni Perera. Aside from music, I have a passion for learning languages, including Japanese, French, and Spanish.
I have two brothers, Newantha and Dineth. My family is very musical; my brothers play the organ, and we often practise together.
I also have two dogs, Johnny and Ash. I have fun playing with them and going on adventures together.
What inspired you to learn music?
Growing up, music has always been a significant part of my life. I was captivated by how it made me feel, bringing joy, comfort, and inspiration.
My brothers play the organ, and I was fascinated by the beautiful melodies they created. Listening to them sparked my own interest in music, and I decided to learn how to play the piano.
Along the way, I also discovered a love for singing, which has become another important part of my musical journey. Music, in all its forms, continues to shape who I am and brings me immense happiness.
Can you tell us about your journey in music?
I began playing the piano when I was younger, inspired by my brothers, who were always practising the organ. I would sit and listen to them play, and over time, I realised that I wanted to create music too.
That’s when I decided to start taking piano lessons. As I grew more comfortable with the instrument, my passion for music expanded, and I began learning how to sing.
Singing has quickly become something I love because it allows me to express myself in a different, more personal way.
What motivated you to learn different languages?
I think it’s fun because learning new languages actually helps with understanding different cultures and allows you to communicate with people from all over the world.
In a way, music is a kind of language too, so learning both fits together perfectly!
What is your favourite language?
I love French; it sounds so beautiful, especially in songs. But I also like English because I’ve grown used to singing in it.
Could you give us some tips on how to successfully learn foreign languages?
It’s important to practise a little bit each day, even if it’s just by listening to music in that language.
Try to speak the language with someone as much as possible or watch movies with subtitles. The more you expose yourself to the language, the faster you’ll learn.
What are your hobbies besides listening to music?
I love to read and draw. Sometimes, while I’m drawing, I like to listen to music because it helps me relax.
It’s a peaceful way for me to unwind and enjoy both activities at the same time.
What is your ambition?
I want to be a professional musician one day; maybe even perform on stage. But I also want to continue learning new instruments and languages.
Is there anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to thank my brothers and my parents for encouraging me to pursue music, as well as my music teachers for their patience and support.
I have been fortunate to learn from Hiruni Perera, who is an exceptional teacher. Not only is she knowledgeable and skillful, but she is also very patient and encouraging.
Mrs. Perera’s passion for music is contagious, inspiring me to try new things and explore my own abilities. I am truly grateful for her guidance.
Finally, can music make the world a better place?
In my personal view, music has the remarkable ability to unite people from all corners of the world.
No matter where someone is from, music creates a shared experience that brings us all together. It fills our hearts with joy and tranquillity, and can even provide solace during difficult times, helping to lift burdens and release us from our sufferings.
Undoubtedly, music makes the world a much better place, fostering connections and understanding among diverse cultures and individuals.
