An Opposition parliamentarian last week expressed concerns over some VIPs continuing to use a large number of vehicles in their convoys despite claims by the Government that large vehicle convoys were no longer approved for VIPs.
Dissident Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Chandima Weerakkody had told Parliament on Tuesday (20) that a top military officer was seen travelling with seven vehicles in his convoy despite the economic crisis in the country.
He had noted that he had witnessed this convoy a few days back while returning from Galle.
Weerakkody had posed a question to State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe on who had approved funds for so many vehicles to be deployed for one top officer, at a time the public was struggling to purchase their food requirements.
The MP had also said that he suspected that the convoy belonged to a very senior military officer.
However, State Minister Semasinghe had said that he was not prepared to respond to the allegation at the time.
