The Railways Department plans to upgrade the Polgahawela–Mahawa section of the Northern Line to a dual track, starting with the Polgahawela–Kurunegala segment. 

The move aims to reduce delays and boost efficiency, as the current single-track system causes frequent train stoppages. 

Dual tracks currently exist only from Colombo Fort to Polgahawela.
