Sri Lanka has been elected to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for a six-year term starting January 2025.
Securing 177 votes, the second highest among Asia Pacific nations and overall, Sri Lanka joins seven other countries from the region, including China, Japan, and Singapore.
UNCITRAL, established in 1966, plays a key role in harmonising international trade laws.
Sri Lanka's past trade legislation, such as the Arbitration Act and Electronic Transaction Act, has been shaped by UNCITRAL model laws.
