17 Jun 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to provide a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000 for children and street children in institutional care or guardianship settings across Sri Lanka.

Approximately 9,191 children are currently housed in 356 Children Development Centers operated by the Government, voluntary organizations, and NGOs as of end-2024.

According to the 2025 Budget, Rs. 1,000 million has been allocated for this initiative. Out of the monthly Rs. 5,000 allowance, Rs. 3,000 will be provided to the child’s respective development centre or guardian for education, health, and welfare, disbursed via the National Savings Bank (NSB).

The remaining Rs. 2,000 will be deposited monthly into a National Savings Bank account under the child’s name to support their long-term well-being.

A monitoring committee chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs will oversee the program to ensure sustainability and accountability.
