- Related concept paper in public domain to be taken up for public consultation dialogue
- Changes to be made if required based on views, proposals put forward, per Edu. Secy.
The Education Ministry stated the concept paper on education reforms would be opened up for public discussion in the coming days, as the Ministry continues to review the overall reform process.
Speaking to The Daily Morning, the Ministry Secretary, Nalaka Kaluwewa said that the review is currently underway and that the Ministry plans to hold a public dialogue soon. "The concept paper on education reforms is published on the Ministry's website. We will have a public discussion on it. The process will move forward after taking into account the ideas and proposals received through this exercise. Changes will be made if necessary following this consultation."
The education reform process has faced several issues in recent months, including problems linked to the Grade Six modules, allegations the relevant stakeholders such as teachers and principals were not adequately consulted, and criticism over the manner in which decisions were taken. Following the incident of an inappropriate web link being included in the Grade Six English module incident, the Government halted the implementation of Grade Six education reforms until next year (2027).
Meanwhile, claiming that responsibility cannot be limited to a few National Institute of Education (NIE) officials over failures in the education reform process, the Ceylon Teachers’ Union recently requested the appointment of an independent body, similar to a Presidential Commission of Inquiry, to examine the entire process and recommend action against those responsible. He said the decision to postpone the Grade Six education reforms by one year itself shows the reform process has not delivered the intended results.
