Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe stated there is no general rice shortage, only a temporary concern over the ‘Keeri Samba’ variety.
About 85,000 metric tons are stored in Polonnaruwa, which could ease the shortage if released. Imports of a substitute variety ‘GR11’ may be considered later if needed.
The Government aims to keep rice prices below Rs. 230/kg, noting increased Yala season cultivation.
