Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala informed Parliament today (18) that security authorities have seized over 20 tons of narcotics since January 01 of this year.
Speaking during the Committee Stage debate on the 2026 Budget, Minister Wijepala stated that the massive seizures are a result of years of drug smuggling that turned the country into a supply network, often with the involvement of politicians and organized criminal groups.
The Minister credited the success to the ‘Ratama Ekata’ drug prevention campaign and the active efforts of security forces.
He specifically praised the Sri Lanka Navy for cutting off the drug supply chain via sea routes, and the Police Special Task Force (STF) for carrying out successful operations domestically.
