St. Peter's College Colombo and D.S. Senanayake College Colombo will be battling it out to reign supreme in the Sri Lanka schools basketball arena as they will play at the boys’ “A” Division finals today (7) at 4 p.m. at the St. Peter’s courts in Bambalapitiya.
D.S. Senanayake College entered the “A” Division finals after a long wait of 15 years, after beating Royal College Colombo by a thumping 15 points, 70-55 in the semifinal.
St. Peter’s emerged victorious, defeating archrivals and much-fancied St. Joseph's College in a match which was closely contested. At the final whistle, it was 59-50 in a thrilling semifinal showdown. The game between the two saints went down to the wire as the halftime score read 26-26.
In the quarter-finals, St. Peter’s College beat Trinity College Kandy in a commanding victory
of 63-45 and D.S. Senanayake College beat S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia with ease, 64-43.
Interestingly, DSS defeated St. Peter’s in October this year to be crowned champions at the All Island Schools Games Tournament in Jaffna. However the Peterites are the defending “A” Division champions and they will come out all guns blazing to defend their title against what is considered one of the most lethal DSS basketball outfits in history.
Royal College will take on St. Joseph’s College in the consolation finals (third place playoff).
Both teams are geared up for the ultimate battle for the title; it’s a clash of titans that promises to be nothing short of a spectacular display of cager skills.
Previously yesterday (6), the schools basketball body was uncertain on selecting a set location to play the semifinals and were juggling between two locations, the reason being rain. If it rains, they play in an indoor court; if not they play outdoors. We still do not know what the officials have in mind for the all-important finals. For now, they have confirmed the St. Peter’s courts. Lord knows what these authorities controlling the sporting body think when planning such events, involving precious time and money of children and schools.
