The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) recorded a loss of Rs. 38.7 billion in 2025, despite multiple electricity tariff revisions, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) stated.
The CBSL Annual Economic Review noted that higher thermal power generation costs during dry weather conditions contributed to the losses.
Electricity tariffs were reduced in 2024 and cut by around 20% in January 2025, before being increased by 15% in June 2025.
CEB’s liabilities also rose, with short-term borrowings increasing to Rs. 206.2 billion by end-2025.
The CBSL stated that a further 10.3% tariff revision is planned from April 2026.
