A preliminary feasibility study has begun for Sri Lanka’s first canal-top solar power project along the Viyana Canal in Mahiyanganaya.

The project proposes installing solar panels over the canal, which extends for more than 20 kilometres, to generate renewable energy for the national grid.

Authorities say the project could also reduce water evaporation and include measures to prevent wild elephants from falling into the canal.
