- 1 dead, 10 injured as bus crashes into tree
A 17-year-old school student was killed in a road accident in Bandaragama on Wednesday evening (22). The accident occurred when a motorcycle attempting to enter the main road from a by-road near the Kotalawala Junction on the Panadura-Horana Road collided with a bus travelling towards Horana, within the Bandaragama Police Division.
The injured motorcyclist was initially admitted to the Bandaragama Divisional Hospital and later transferred to the Horana District General Hospital (DGH) for further treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries. The deceased has been identified as a school student from Yatiyana, Bandaragama. The body has been placed at the Horana Hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, another fatal road accident occurred on Wednesday evening near the second-kilometre (km) post on the Hatamuna Junction-Hingurakgoda Road, within the Polonnaruwa Police Division. A motorcycle heading towards the Hatamuna Junction had collided head-on with another motorcycle that travelled from the opposite direction. The motorcyclist, the pillion rider, and the female rider of the other motorcycle sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Polonnaruwa DGH. The female rider later succumbed to her injuries. The deceased has been identified as a 59-year-old resident of Athumalpitiya, Polonnaruwa. The body of the deceased has been placed at the Polonnaruwa Hospital morgue.
Earlier, one person had died and 10 others had been injured and hospitalised in a bus accident that occurred between the 35th km post and the 36th km post on the Mannar-Medawachchiya Main Road on Wednesday morning. Police said that the accident occurred after the driver of a private bus travelling from Colombo to Mannar lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash into a roadside tree. The deceased has been identified as a 29-year-old resident of Murunkan, Asikulam. The body of the deceased has been placed at the Chettikulam Base Hospital mortuary. Eight other males and two females who were travelling in the bus sustained injuries and were admitted to the Mannar DGH and Vavuniya DGH. The driver of the bus is also among the injured persons receiving treatment.
