Following are excerpts from a conversation with Sheshan about his music career:

Fourteen-year-old Sheshan Cooray is a passionate musician with a deep love for singing and playing the guitar.

He is an active member of his school choir and band, contributing his talents to various performances.

Sheshan has participated in several music competitions and is also a dedicated swimmer. Alongside his musical pursuits, he aspires to become a pilot.

Following are excerpts from a conversation with Sheshan about his music career:

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Matheesha Emanuel Sheshan Cooray, and I am 14 years old.

I study in Grade 9 at St. Joseph Vaz College. I’m from Wennappuwa and have a younger brother who is eight years old.

I have a strong passion for music. I play the guitar and the saxophone, and I love singing as well.

At school I’m an active member of the choir. I also sing prayers as part of my daily responsibilities, and I’m part of the school band, where I play the saxophone.

I’m a swimmer and have experience playing basketball and cricket as well.

I balance my schoolwork with my musical pursuits and enjoy teaching music to friends who need help. Currently, I’m preparing to complete Level 5 of the Trinity Classical Guitar Exam.

What inspired you to pursue music?

I have loved music ever since I was a little boy. My father, who is a musician himself, was the person who first taught me how to play the guitar. His passion for music deeply influenced me.

Initially, it was my parents who encouraged me to pursue music. They recognised my talent and supported me by enrolling me in voice training with Mr. Lasantha Fernando and classical guitar lessons with Ms. Thilini Maheshi.

These experiences have further fuelled my love for music and motivated me to continue improving.

Can you tell us more about your musical career?

I have participated in three all-island competitions, which have helped me grow as a musician. I am also an active member of my church choir, where I play the guitar during performances.

One of the highlights of my music journey is collaborating with my mother. She wrote a prayer, and I composed the melody for it. This piece is available on YouTube on her channel, ‘Shehara Deutrom’.

Can you share your experiences in the music field?

I’m part of a band with a few of my friends, where I play the guitar, organ, and drum set, as well as sing.

We haven’t decided on a name yet, but we’re excited to perform at events like Christmas carols at my church and at the St. Joseph’s Sunday School, Wennappuwa.

What are some unforgettable memories from your music career?

One of the most unforgettable moments in my music career was performing at the ‘Glorious Concert’ held at Hotel Sampath this November.

It was a dream come true to sing while the renowned musician Dinesh Subasinghe played. I also had the chance to showcase my skills on the guitar and saxophone during the event.

Another cherished memory is attending workshops led by Mr. Amaranath Ranatunga, a highly respected figure in the music industry. My guitar teacher, Ms. Thilini, is one of his students, and these workshops have taught me so much about musical techniques and expression.

These experiences have truly enriched my musical journey.

What is your ambition in music and your career?

In music, my ambition is to become a good musician and use my talents to make a positive impact. I want to continue contributing to my church choir and use my music to inspire and bring joy to others.

Career-wise, my goal is to become a pilot.

You said your family shares your love for music.

Yes, music runs in my family. My younger brother, Shenal, is also a talented singer and can play the organ. We often sing together at home, which creates a wonderful musical atmosphere.

Our mother supports us by sharing our music on her YouTube channel, where we upload our performances. It’s a special way for us to bond as a family and share our passion for music with others.

My grandfather, who is no longer with us, too loved music and encouraged me.

What kind of feedback do you receive about your music?

I receive a lot of feedback, and it’s always very encouraging. My friends often tell me that I have the potential to become a professional guitarist, which motivates me to keep improving.

Such positive responses inspire me to work harder and pursue my musical dreams.

What role do swimming and sports play in your life?

Swimming is more of a hobby for me. Since I dedicate most of my time to music, I don’t get as much time to practice as I’d like.

I used to play cricket and basketball, but I’ve temporarily stepped away from them to focus on my musical career. While I enjoy sports, music remains my top priority at the moment.

Who would you like to thank for supporting you on your journey?

I would first like to thank Amma, Thaththa, and my brother for always supporting and encouraging me.

A special thanks goes to my grandfather, who is no longer with us, but his love and generosity in gifting me most of my instruments have been instrumental in shaping my musical journey.

I’m also deeply grateful to my School Principal Father Priyanjeewa and my music teachers, including Vasana Teacher, Riyenci Sir, Brother Dishan, Delrin Teacher, Sadani Teacher, Beena Teacher, Varuna Sir, Dammika Sir (Eastern Music), Thakshila Teacher, Achira Sir, Prasanna Sampath Sir, and our Western Band Coach Akmeemana Sir. Their guidance and encouragement have been invaluable.

Above all, I thank Jesus for blessing me with this talent and the opportunity to use it to help others.
