Haj celebrations set as Sri Lanka announces festival date

Muslims in Sri Lanka will celebrate Eid al-Adha on 28 May, following an announcement by the Colombo Grand Mosque and the Moon Sighting Committee.

Religious authorities stated that the crescent moon for the month of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, was not sighted in Sri Lanka, making 19 May the first day of the new month.

Accordingly, Arafat Day will be observed on 27 May, while the Haj festival will take place the following day on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the sacrifice and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and is considered one of the most significant festivals in Islam.

The occasion also coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah, one of the five pillars of Islam and a religious obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey.
