Colombo Nat’l Hospital: Rights group alleges serious lack of resources

16 Jun 2025 | BY Sumudu Chamara

The Medical and Civil Rights Professionals’ Association expressed concerns that the Colombo National Hospital is lacking a number of resources including various types of medicines which has placed patients in a difficult situation.

Speaking to the media, the Association’s President Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa claimed that the number of CT and MRI tests being conducted at the hospital has also declined which he said could deteriorate patients’ health. He added that as a result, patients tend to obtain these services from the private sector for high charges. He further pointed out a lack of resources in various aspects of the hospital’s operations including in the mortuary.

In addition, Dr. Sanjeewa added that there are administrative issues as well, which he alleged has further affected the hospital’s services.

The Daily Morning’s attempts to contact the hospital administration to discuss these claims were not successful.
