Iranian missiles strike Qatar gas hub

20 Mar 2026

Iran launched a series of devastating missile strikes against global energy infrastructure in the Middle East yesterday (19), plunging the region into even more chaos.

In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing regional conflict, Tehran made good on its vow to retaliate against "oil and gas targets," striking the heart of Qatar’s energy industry and attempting to pierce the air defences of the Saudi capital.

State-owned giant QatarEnergy confirmed "extensive damage" at Ras Laffan Industrial City, the world’s premier hub for liquefied natural gas (LNG). Witnesses reported massive plumes of smoke rising from the facility after several missiles evaded interception in the early hours of Thursday.

While emergency teams have reportedly brought the resulting fires under control, the strike on the Pearl GTL plant and several LNG terminals represents a direct hit on the world’s energy lifeline. "This is a flagrant breach of international law," a Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, confirming the expulsion of senior Iranian diplomats.

Simultaneously, the Saudi Ministry of Defence announced it had intercepted four ballistic missiles over Riyadh. Debris from the mid-air destructions fell across several residential districts, though no casualties have been reported.

In the Kingdom's Eastern Province, Saudi forces also foiled a coordinated drone swarm targeting a vital gas facility. A military spokesperson confirmed:

"Our air defence systems successfully neutralised the hostile threats, preventing what was intended to be a catastrophic strike on our national infrastructure."

Global Economic Shockwaves

The attacks have sent immediate shockwaves through global markets with Brent crude surged past $115 per barrel this afternoon.

Heightened alerts are in place across the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has threatened to close entirely.

The Iranian strikes are believed to be a direct retaliation for an alleged Israeli attack on Iran's South Pars gas field on Wednesday. While Israel has not officially claimed responsibility, Tehran’s leadership warned that any country hosting US military bases would be considered a "legitimate target."

US President Donald Trump has since issued a stern warning to Tehran, stating that further strikes on Qatar—a key American ally—would trigger an "overwhelming" US military response.
