GMOA announces nationwide token strike today

31 Mar 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced plans to initiate a nationwide token strike today, March 31, starting at 8 a.m., citing several concerns including allegations of illegal transfers of doctors.

Prabath Sugathadasa, Secretary of the GMOA, confirmed that the strike will be observed across all hospitals nationwide.

However, he clarified that certain facilities will be exempt from the strike, including maternity hospitals, children’s hospitals, the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama, specialized kidney units, tri-forces hospitals, and the National Institute of Mental Health.

Sugathadasa issued a warning that if the government does not address their concerns, more stringent trade union actions could be implemented in the future.

In response to the strike announcement, Deputy Minister of Health Hansaka Wijemuni expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a large-scale strike by doctors.

He stated, “I don’t think doctors can resort to strike action.

Historically, such actions have not taken place on a significant scale. I believe this trade union lacks the capacity to carry out such measures. Although there have been various statements recently, nothing substantial has happened so far. Nonetheless, if doctors have issues, we are ready to listen.”
