The Joint Opposition has responded to the resignation of Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody and Ministry Secretary Udayanga Hemapala amid investigations into a coal procurement process.
In a statement, the opposition noted that a minister’s resignation is generally seen as accepting responsibility, but stressed it does not influence the proceedings of a Presidential Commission.
It also alleged that the company awarded the coal contract had not been registered at the time, adding that the government must bear collective responsibility for the decision.
