The recent accident involving the former Speaker of the Parliament and the incumbent National People’s Power Government Parliamentarian Ashoka Ranwala has sparked an important national conversation about road safety, accountability and the responsibilities of public officials. The jeep driven by Ranwala collided with a car and a motorcycle, injuring him and three others including a six-months-old infant. Ranwala was subsequently arrested for dangerous driving and the failure to prevent the accident and was enlarged on bail. While investigations are ongoing and the full facts are yet to be revealed, several concerns have emerged, particularly regarding allegations that Ranwala was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, and the Police’s failure to conduct swift alcohol testing.

This incident raises serious questions not only about individual accountability but also about the effectiveness and preparedness of the law enforcement agencies in responding to such situations. It also highlights the importance of transparency and cooperation from public officials when they are involved in incidents that affect public safety.

One of the most concerning points raised in the context of this case is the claim that the Police did not conduct a timely or swift alcohol test on Ranwala after the accident. There are allegations that Ranwala was intoxicated during the collision. However, Police officials have stated they could not test Ranwala for drunk driving because they lacked the necessary tools. This is not just a minor oversight but a concerning failure on the part of the Police force to be adequately equipped to handle critical yet basic aspects of traffic law enforcement. Breathalyzers and similar testing kits are essential and very often used tools in ensuring road safety and holding drivers accountable. Compared to other equipment used by the Police, these kits are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Their absence in such a crucial moment could even delay the delivery of justice which will have an impact on all the involved parties. The Government and the relevant authorities bear the responsibility of ensuring that every Police station, and especially every traffic Police officer on duty, is equipped with the basic tools that they need to perform their duty. It should also be noted that the timing of alcohol testing is vital.

While the technical and procedural shortcomings of the law enforcement officials are clear, it is equally important for public officials themselves to act responsibly. MPs and other public figures are expected to set an example of conduct and accountability. When involved in incidents of public concern, transparency and cooperation with investigations are paramount. In this case, Ranwala’s medical reports are awaited, and the Police have reported a possible defect in the jeep’s braking system as another factor in the accident.  At the same time, people have raised concerns about whether Ranwala’s security detail was with him when the accident occurred. These are important aspects to be investigated. However, Ranwala can shed light on these concerns, and him being forthcoming about these would greatly help investigate what happened that day and to serve justice including to himself if he is not in the wrong.

The situation has become a matter of public discussion and more importantly, a political debate. Many are alleging the Government and the Police force are protecting Ranwala. In this context, the Police force has a duty to conduct the relevant investigations in accordance with the law and in an impartial manner, and Ranwala has an undeniable responsibility to extend his full cooperation in the investigations, and the Government has a responsibility to ensure the relevant investigations or other processes are not interfered with and receives the necessary support.

In this case, transparency is crucial, as the people need to know how this matter is being handled.
