Coconut production slump in Sri Lanka likely to persist until April 2025

31 Oct 2024

The Coconut Research Institute has warned of a continued decline in coconut production in Sri Lanka until April 2025, citing low rainfall and rising temperatures as key causes.

According to its Director, Dr. Nayani Arachchige, production has notably dropped over the first three harvest cycles this year.

To address the shortage, the Coconut Development Authority has proposed importing coconut kernel for export purposes and suggested setting a Rs. 100 rate for sales at the Colombo Fresh Coconut Auction. Approval for kernel imports remains pending.
