Muslims across the island of Sri Lanka will commence fasting for the holy month of Ramadan starting today (19).
The Colombo Grand Mosque officially announced the beginning of Ramadan after the new moon was sighted yesterday (18), marking the start of this significant religious observance.
During Ramadan, Islamic devotees observe fasting from sunrise to sunset, practicing self-discipline, heightened devotion, and increased prayer.
Fasting during this month is one of the five main pillars of Islam, emphasising spiritual reflection, community, and charity.
It is a longstanding tradition to abstain from eating and drinking throughout daylight hours, fostering a sense of solidarity and devotion among Muslims during this sacred month.
