The government has launched a one-time Rs. 5,000 nutrition allowance for pregnant and lactating mothers, reaffirming its commitment to maternal and child well-being despite current challenges, Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj said today.
Speaking at the inaugural distribution ceremony in Wellawatte, the Minister stressed the importance of maternal mental and physical health for early childhood development.
The allowance, introduced in view of the recent disaster situation and festive season, is provided under a programme of the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development.
Eligible beneficiaries include pregnant mothers registered at maternal clinics on or before 30 November, 2025, and lactating mothers with infants under four months of age.
