44 wild elephant deaths reported in 2026

According to the Department of Wildlife Conservation, 44 wild elephants have died in Sri Lanka between 1 January and 20 February, 2026. 


The causes include shootings, illegal electric fences, train accidents, poisoning, and drowning. 


During the same period, there have also been 10 reported human deaths resulting from wild elephant attacks, highlighting ongoing conflicts between humans and wildlife in the region.
