Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith says religion holds only a minimal place in modern society, with many people placing greater emphasis on leisure and material pursuits than on spiritual life.

Speaking during a Holy Mass marking the 150th Jubilee of the Divine Saviour's Church in Makevita, the Cardinal said many churches in developed countries remain largely empty while large crowds gather for entertainment and sporting events.

He also stated that many societies are experiencing moral and spiritual decline, as greater priority is given to physical needs over humanitarian and religious values.
