One of the things that stands out as I explore the UAE is the level of care and attention given to women’s safety and comfort, especially when it comes to public transportation. Whether on the Dubai Metro, buses, or taxis, there are specific measures that prioritise women’s needs, making travel both safe and comfortable. This experience has been incredibly refreshing, especially coming from countries where safety of women in public spaces is not always guaranteed.

Every time I board the Dubai Metro, I’m greeted by a clearly marked ‘Women and Children Only’ section. These sections, usually at the front of each train, are outlined in pink and offer a space reserved exclusively for women and children. 

For me, this thoughtful touch creates an immediate sense of comfort and safety. It’s not just about having more space – it’s about knowing that I can travel without the discomfort of a crowded, mixed-gender environment, particularly during rush hours.

A secure and comfortable journey

The women-only sections are a brilliant idea. In the hustle and bustle of a large, cosmopolitan city like Dubai, public transport can be crowded, especially during peak hours. But these reserved sections offer a sense of calm, a space where women can travel in peace, away from the congestion. I’ve used these sections multiple times and they have become my preferred option, especially when I need a breather from the busier carriages.

The feeling of security is palpable. Whether you are a solo traveller, an expat, or a local resident, knowing there is a dedicated space just for women makes commuting much more pleasant. It is more than just a convenience; it is a clear reflection of the UAE’s commitment to ensuring women feel safe and respected in public spaces.

I have often seen local women dressed in traditional abayas sitting comfortably in these sections, free from the concern of being in crowded or mixed-gender spaces. The design respects both cultural values and modern needs, blending the two seamlessly to ensure women’s privacy and dignity. 

However, the women-only sections aren’t just for Emirati women. They are a welcoming feature for all women – whether tourists like myself or expats who have made the UAE their home. This inclusivity is what makes the system work so well.

Women-only taxis

Another feature that stands out in the UAE is the option of women-driven taxis, commonly known as ‘pink taxis’. These taxis are driven by female drivers and are designated for women and families. As someone who frequently travels alone, this service has been an incredible reassurance. Late-night travel in an unfamiliar city can often be nerve-wracking, but knowing I have the option of choosing a taxi driven by a woman offers an extra layer of comfort and security.

These pink taxis are easily identifiable and can be found at major transportation hubs, shopping malls, and popular tourist areas. The drivers are professional, courteous, and trained to ensure the safety of female passengers. I have used this service multiple times and it is a relief knowing that I can rely on this option whenever I feel the need for added comfort.

Safety in public spaces

What makes travelling in the UAE even more impressive is the overarching sense of safety that permeates public spaces. From my experience, the UAE is one of the safest places I have visited as a woman. Walking around Dubai or Abu Dhabi, even late at night, I never feel the unease that sometimes accompanies solo female travel. The streets are well-lit and the presence of security personnel is consistent, further adding to the feeling of safety.

In many countries, there is a certain level of caution that comes with being a woman in public spaces, but in the UAE, I feel free to explore without those usual anxieties. Whether it is walking along the Marina at night or navigating through the bustling streets of Downtown Dubai, I have always felt secure. This attention to safety is deeply embedded in the country’s infrastructure and public policies.

The broader picture

The women-only sections in public transport and female-driven taxis are part of a larger effort by the UAE to create an inclusive and empowering environment for women. The country has made great strides in promoting gender equality, and these public transport policies are a reflection of that commitment. 

This focus on inclusivity extends beyond just the Emirati population. The UAE is a melting pot of cultures, with expats and tourists from all over the world. It is encouraging to see that these policies cater to women of all backgrounds, creating a welcoming environment for everyone. It is a reminder that safety and respect for women should be universal, and the UAE sets an example in this regard.

Living and travelling in the UAE, I have come to appreciate how much the country prioritises women’s safety and comfort, especially in public transportation. The women-only sections on the Metro and buses, along with the female-driven taxis, offer an experience that is not only convenient but empowering.

For tourists, expats, and locals alike, these measures make the UAE a welcoming place for women. It is not just about having a reserved seat or a female driver – it is about the broader message of inclusivity and respect.
