Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) continues to develop its student sports framework through a structured and expanding ecosystem aimed at supporting both athletic and personal development. Students are encouraged to pursue competitive sport alongside academic studies, with an emphasis on leadership, discipline and teamwork.

The University currently supports 23 sports disciplines, including badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, martial arts, netball, powerlifting, rugby, swimming, table tennis, tennis, athletics, volleyball, as well as several indoor and emerging sports.

In recent years, the SLIIT Physical Education and Sports Unit, in collaboration with the SLIIT Sports Council, has organised 14 major invitational inter-university and open tournaments, drawing participation from university and school-level athletes. These events include competitions in badminton, carrom, chess, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming, tennis, athletics and volleyball.

During the year, SLIIT is set to introduce three additional inter-university tournaments covering carrom, karate and futsal. Student-athletes also take part in competitions hosted by other universities, recognised sports clubs, and national and international platforms.

The SLIIT sports calendar features more than 100 tournaments annually, reflecting a structured approach to competitive sport. The University has been recognised as the leading non-state university in sports competitions, with several student-athletes selected to represent Sri Lanka at international events.

Eligible students receive support through the Scholarships for Broad-Based Performance, while notable sporting achievements are acknowledged through institutional incentives, including academic recognition initiatives aimed at supporting balance between studies and sport.

With established training facilities, coaching support and an extensive competitive calendar, SLIIT continues to provide an environment that enables students to engage in organised sport alongside their academic programmes.
