Surgical services have resumed at District General Hospital, Chilaw, following emergency repairs supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The hospital’s operating theatre was restored after damage caused by flooding from Cyclone Ditwah, allowing sterilisation procedures and surgeries to recommence.
UNFPA carried out the repairs in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Government of Sri Lanka.
Restoration work was completed by 30 December 2025, enabling the resumption of obstetric, neonatal and other essential surgeries.
Chilaw District General Hospital treats around 500 pregnant women each month and is a key referral centre in the North Western Province.
