The Election Commission (EC) is planning to release the results of at least two to three Local Government (LG) institutions by midnight today (6), according to its Chairperson, R.M.A.L. Rathnayake.
The Elections to elect representatives for more than 300 LG institutions islandwide, is to take place today.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (5), Rathnayake said that they hope to release the results as soon as possible. "It’s difficult to give an exact timeline. But, we expect to announce the results of at least two to three LG institutions by midnight on 6 May.”
According to him, the results from each division of a particular LG institution will first be announced at the respective locations before being sent to the relevant District Secretariat. From the District Secretariat, the final result of the relevant LG body will be referred to the EC.
The LG institutions for which representatives are to be elected today include 28 municipal councils (MCs), 36 urban councils and 272 pradeshiya sabhas (PSs). The Kalmunai MC, the Dehiattakandiya PS (the Ampara District), the Mannar PS (the Mannar District), the Poonakary PS (the Kilinochchi District), and the Elpitiya PS (the Galle District) are excluded from the Elections.
On an earlier occasion, Rathnayake said that it would be important for the people to cast their vote in the LG Elections, pointing out that they (LG institutions) handle many aspects of the people's daily lives. “LG representatives are those who will make decisions about the people's immediate surroundings and services. We urge everyone to make sure that they cast their vote and help appoint responsible representatives," Rathnayake pointed out.
