Deadly Pakistan floods displace millions, authorities declare climate emergency

12 Sep 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe floods across Pakistan, leading to the evacuation of over two million people in Punjab province and more than 150,000 in Sindh province.

Since late June, the floods have claimed more than 900 lives nationwide.

The disaster has destroyed extensive areas of farms and houses, posing a significant challenge for the country.

Rescue operations, which include door-to-door relocations by boat, have been hampered by strong currents, leading to several rescue boat capsizing incidents and fatalities.

The floods have also affected neighboring India, killing at least 30 people and impacting over 354,000.

Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority is distributing relief supplies, including blankets, tents, and water purification devices.

The United Nations has allocated $5 million, and the US has approved funding and deployed disaster response personnel to support Pakistan's relief efforts.

Pakistani authorities have declared a climate emergency and are developing a 300-day plan to address the challenges posed by climate change, which has intensified the country's extreme weather events.
