Sri Lankans consume more than three times the amount of sugar recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), according to Consultant Dental Surgeon Chandana Gajanayake.

He said the average person consumes about 34 kilograms of sugar annually, compared to the WHO’s recommended 10 kilograms.

The high intake has contributed to rising dental issues, with around 50% of adults suffering from gum disease.

Dr. Gajanayake made these remarks ahead of the fifth National Oral Health Survey, scheduled to begin on 10 March and continue until November.
