We had the privilege of sitting down with the visionary owner and founder Ashfa Gunawijaya behind this sweet sensation, to delve into the journey of how their passion for baking ignited the spark that led to the rise of Crazy Cakes. In conversation with Gunawijaya, The Daily Morning Brunch uncovered the story behind this extraordinary cake aficionado, exploring the triumphs, challenges, and the sheer artistry that has enchanted dessert enthusiasts far and wide. 

How did you develop a passion for baking and specifically for creating cakes?

My passion for baking took root in my early childhood, watching my mother create delightful desserts in our family kitchen. The sweet aroma of freshly baked goods and the joy on people’s faces when they tasted her creations left a lasting impression on me. As I grew older, I began experimenting with different recipes and techniques, finding solace and creativity in the art of baking. However, it was when I started creating cakes that I truly discovered my calling. The process of sculpting and decorating cakes to celebrate special moments in people’s lives ignited a passion within me, and I knew that cake baking was my true passion.

What inspired you to start your own small business in the cake industry?

The decision to start my own small business in the cake industry was spurred by a combination of factors. Firstly, the overwhelming support and encouragement I received from friends and family for my cake creations gave me the confidence to take a leap of faith. Secondly, I noticed a growing demand for unique, custom-designed cakes that could add a personal touch to any celebration. This realisation, coupled with my desire to share my passion with a broader audience, served as the ultimate inspiration to establish my own cake baking venture.

Could you share some unique or signature cake designs that you offer to your customers?

In my small business, I take pride in offering a range of unique and signature cake designs that leave a lasting impression on our customers. One of them includes “Tropical Paradise” a vibrant, tropical-themed cake adorned with handmade sugar flowers, and cute little species, perfect for toddlers’ birthday celebrations.



How do you ensure that your cakes not only look amazing but also taste delicious?

At our premise, we believe that aesthetics and taste are equally important. To ensure our cakes not only look amazing but also taste delicious, we follow a meticulous process. We use premium-quality ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible, to ensure freshness and flavour. Our team of skilled bakers and decorators work in tandem to create visually stunning designs that complement the flavours inside. Regular taste tests and customer feedback allow us to refine our recipes and maintain a high standard of quality.

What challenges have you faced as a small business cake baker, and how have you overcome them?

As a small business cake baker, we encountered several challenges on our journey. The initial struggle was establishing a presence in a competitive market. To overcome this, we invested in building a strong online presence through social media and a user-friendly environment. Word-of-mouth marketing and collaborations with event planners and local businesses also helped expand our customer base. Additionally, managing time efficiently and optimising our production process helped us meet customer demands without compromising on quality.

Can you tell us about any memorable experiences or special requests you’ve received from customers?

One particularly heart-warming experience involved creating a cake for a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. The cake was a replica of their original wedding cake, bringing back cherished memories and tears of joy. Another unforgettable moment was designing a storybook cake for a child’s birthday, incorporating their favourite characters and scenes from their beloved bedtime stories.

Do you have anything coming up this year?

In the coming year, we plan to launch a website for bookings and expand it for all the people to reach us. We would also increase our pop-ups to meet and interact with all the lovely people who enjoy our products, ensuring that everyone can experience a slice of happiness.
