Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya stated that the simultaneous arrest of five organized criminals in Indonesia is the first operation of its kind in history.
Speaking at a media briefing today (28), the IGP stated that those arrested have "Red Notices" issued against them by Interpol.
The operation was conducted by the Indonesian police, with coordination from Sri Lankan police and assistance from Interpol.
The IGP noted that while organized crime in Sri Lanka has a history of political connections, this environment is now changing, and criminals no longer have political protection.
He added that many organized crimes are directed from foreign countries, but the police have now been instructed to take legal action against such individuals without political influence.
The IGP also mentioned that organized criminals are active in Dubai, Oman, Russia, Belarus, and France, and that action will be taken against them soon. He concluded by thanking the Indonesian Embassy for its support in the operation.
