- Namal alleges intimidation of AG/Judiciary, claims Govt. is presenting fabricated evidence, politicising probes
Two silent protests were held yesterday (21) in Hulftsdorp both for and against the Attorney General (AG). One involved civil society activists calling for the AG to resign, citing alleged cover-ups, double standards, the non-filing of cases despite the availability of evidence, and corruption, while the other was by lawyers defending the independence of the AG’s office.
Meanwhile, the Government is attempting to intimidate the AG’s Department and the Judiciary in order to achieve its political objectives, the National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Opposition Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has accused. Rajapaksa accused the Government of attempting to influence legal processes by presenting fabricated evidence and politicising investigations. He noted that any efforts to pressure the AG and the Judiciary would undermine the rule of law. Rajapaksa said however that he was confident that the AG’s Department and the judicial system would not succumb to pressure from the Government.
Speaking to journalists in Battaramulla, he also accused the Government of propagating division among political parties, State institutions and public officials. Rajapaksa alleged that the Government is undermining religious harmony and traditions in the North and South of the country.
