- To take sudden action if CEB liquidation date is gazetted prior to resolving employees’ demands
The electricity sector trade unions (TUs) have warned they will engage in TU action without prior notice if the date for the liquidation of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is announced in the Gazette without addressing their demands. A letter signed by representatives of 24 CEB TUs has been sent to the Energy Minister, conveying the matter.
The TUs had earlier submitted a letter containing eight demands to the Minister on 12 January of this year (2026), calling for measures to safeguard the rights of CEB employees. However, as no positive response was received so far, the unions have sent a further letter to the Minister on Monday (9), reiterating their demands. The letter states that due to the authorities’ failure to provide acceptable solutions, the TUs have been left with no alternative but to take TU action to secure their demands. Accordingly, 24 TUs, including the Engineering Association, have decided to initiate strict TU action without further notice if the liquidation date of the CEB is gazetted without fulfilling the relevant demands.
