Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has seen significant growth in the first weeks of 2026, with arrivals increasing by 12.5% year-on-year to reach 401,787 visitors in the first 45 days, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
In particular, the first 12 days of February alone recorded 124,460 arrivals, a 19% rise compared to the same period last year, with an average of 10,372 visitors daily.
Officials attribute this surge partly to the momentum generated by the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup matches hosted in the country. Cricket fans from India, the UK, Australia, Russia, Germany, China, and the US contributed significantly to the influx.
Host cities like Colombo and Kandy experienced full hotel occupancy during match days, with increased demand spilling over to Mount Lavinia and Negombo.
Tourism revenue during this period has also benefited from higher guest spending, longer stays, and increased demand for accommodation, transport, and leisure activities. The sector is on track to surpass early-year revenue projections, supported by these higher expenditure levels.
To build on this momentum, tourism authorities are actively promoting Sri Lanka’s diverse leisure, cultural, and experiential offerings through digital campaigns.
The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management has expanded training programs in event hospitality, sports tourism management, and digital marketing to enhance service standards.
The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau has launched initiatives to position the country as a prime destination for MICE tourism, with several international events planned.
