The suspect Sampath Manamperi, who was detained for interrogation by the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), has been ordered to be remanded in custody by the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court (MC) on Tuesday (23).

Accordingly, he was remanded until tomorrow (26) over the concealment of two containers of raw materials allegedly used in the production of the drug crystal methamphetamine (also known as ‘Ice’) in the Middeniya area and reportedly belonging to detained organised crime suspect known by the alias ‘Kehelbaddara Padme’. In addition, the Magistrate ordered that he be remanded until 1 October in connection with the recent discovery of weapons at the residence of a female acquaintance of Manamperi in Thalawa, Middeniya.

Several firearms and ammunition buried by Manamperi behind a residence of a female acquaintance in Thalawa were discovered on Monday (22) during the interrogations of Manamperi and the organised crime suspect known by the alias ‘Backhoe Saman’. Accordingly, the Police stated that two gold-coloured magazines, a nine millimetre pistol, a hand grenade, and 115 rounds of Type-56 ammunition were found buried behind the house. Police revealed that the firearms and ammunition had been handed over to Manamperi by ‘Backhoe Saman’ two months ago.

The Walasmulla MC on 17 September had granted the PNB permission to detain Manamperi for seven days for questioning. Manamperi had surrendered to the Walasmulla MC on 17 September.

Meanwhile, the post-mortem (PM) examination on the bodies of the three persons who died under mysterious circumstances in the house where drugs were later found in the Seenimodara area of Tangalle, has revealed that they died due to overdosing on a mix of heroin and beer. The PM examination of the bodies was conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Tangalle Base Hospital, Ruwan Nanayakkara. The JMO was also scheduled to present the facts in this regard to the Tangalle MC.

The bodies of two persons who died under mysterious circumstances were found in a house in the Seenimodara area on Monday based on information received by the Police. Another person in the house in question had also died after being admitted to the Tangalle Hospital in critical condition.

Subsequent investigations revealed that a stock of crystal methamphetamine and heroin was found in three lorries, the Police said.
