Empower the Beijing Convention 2010 relevant to int’l civil aviation

26 Feb 2025

The Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Relating to International Civil Aviation (Beijing Convention 2010) declared the use of civil aircraft for causing a death, bodily injuries, serious harm to the body, and for releasing biological, scientific, nuclear weapons or material, or using certain biological, chemical or nuclear weapons or equivalent material against an aircraft or civil aircraft, as criminal acts. Since such criminal acts are not covered by the provisions of the presently effective Suppression of Unlawful Acts of Violence at Airports Serving International Civil Aviation Act, No. 31 of 1996, approval had been granted at the Cabinet of Ministers meeting held on 2 May 2022 to prepare a draft to empower the Beijing Convention. Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Civil Aviation to provide the policy approval of the present Cabinet to enable completing preparing the said draft as soon as possible.

Execution of ‘Praja Shakthi’ prog. for poverty eradication

One out of every six individuals from the total population of Sri Lanka at present experiences multi-dimensional poverty and 95.3% of that population are living in rural and estate-related environs. By 2024, the number of beneficiaries has further swelled up to 1.79 million. Since the continuation of this situation for extended periods, a well-planned programme should be implemented to direct the vulnerable groups and communities to a formal social security programme and to utilise the others as active stakeholders in the economic process. Accordingly, the Cabinet granted approval to the resolution forwarded by the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment to implement the ‘Praja Shakthi’ programme as a consolidated programme with multiple approaches.
