The low-floor priority bus service designed for persons with disabilities will be launched today (21) at the Multimodal Transport Center in Makumbura.

This initiative is part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” program, supported by an investment of Rs. 430.7 million, aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusive transportation across the country.

In the first phase, ten modern, air-conditioned low-floor buses will be deployed. These buses are specially designed for easy access by wheelchair users, featuring dedicated spaces and specialized safety features to ensure stability and security during travel.

Each bus can accommodate up to 80 passengers, with 33 seats and designated areas for wheelchairs, making public transport more accessible for all.

The service will operate every 40 minutes during morning and evening peak hours on two main routes: Makumbura to Pettah and Makumbura to Kadawatha.

The routes have been strategically planned to provide convenient access to major healthcare facilities, including Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama and the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo.
