The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Türkiye conducted their second round of political consultations on 5 May , 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara. The talks were co-chaired by Sri Lanka’s Director General of the Europe and North America Division, Sugeeshwara Gunaratna, and Türkiye’s Director General for South Asia, Ambassador Cihad Erginay.
This successful engagement marked a significant milestone in the longstanding and cordial relationship between the two nations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, grounded in mutual respect, shared values, and common interests. They emphasized the importance of maintaining regular political dialogue to review progress and explore new avenues for collaboration.
During the discussions, representatives covered a broad range of topics including bilateral political relations, trade, economic cooperation, defense, connectivity, maritime affairs, education, science, and regional and multilateral issues. Opportunities for expanding investments and joint ventures were also explored, with sectors such as pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, tourism, logistics, and technology identified as key areas for future collaboration.
Sri Lanka expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s humanitarian assistance following Cyclone Ditwah, and both delegations discussed further cooperation in reconstruction and development efforts. The progress in defense and security cooperation was highlighted, with commitments to strengthen institutional links and capacity-building initiatives.
Connectivity and maritime cooperation received particular attention, including the potential to enhance direct air links between Istanbul and Colombo and collaborations in maritime services and the blue economy.
Both sides also underscored the importance of advancing cooperation in higher education, vocational training, and scientific research, with pending bilateral agreements expected to be finalized soon.
Discussions extended to regional and global issues, including developments in West Asia, South Asia, and the Indian Ocean region. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to working closely within the United Nations and other multilateral platforms, emphasising adherence to the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
The successful conclusion of this consultation reflects the strong political will of both nations to elevate bilateral relations, fostering sustainable development, regional stability, and mutual prosperity.
The Sri Lankan delegation included Ambassador Niluka Kadurugamuwa, Minister Nilusha Dilmini, and First Secretary (Commercial) Dilanga Hettiarachchi.
Additionally, during the visit, Director General Gunaratna met with Türkiye’s Director General for Humanitarian and Technical Assistance, Korhan Karakoç, and TİKA Vice President Dr. Ali Ercan, to discuss post-Ditwah assistance and ongoing cooperation efforts.
