GeoAI Exhibition in Colombo to showcase AI powered disaster resilience solutions

11 May 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The United States Embassy in Sri Lanka, in partnership with the Association for Disaster Risk Management Professionals, will host the GeoAI (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence) for Disaster Resilience Exhibition and Symposium on 14 May at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo. The event is open to the public.

The exhibition will highlight how advanced mapping technologies combined with artificial intelligence can strengthen Sri Lanka’s disaster preparedness and emergency response systems.

GeoAI integrates geospatial data such as satellite imagery, maps, and weather patterns with AI analytics to help authorities better predict, monitor, and respond to natural disasters.

The initiative builds on U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence and geospatial innovation and was launched in December 2025 following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah. It was developed by disaster management experts Novil Wijesekara and Aslam Saja in collaboration with ADRiMP, with the aim of improving Sri Lanka’s long-term resilience to extreme weather events.

So far, the programme has trained 150 GIS professionals and university students, equipping them with AI-driven tools that can map flood-prone areas in real time, forecast storm impacts, and support evacuation planning for emergency responders.

These practical applications will be demonstrated at the exhibition through locally developed GeoAI solutions.

The event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on 14 May, offering the public an opportunity to explore how technology and innovation are reshaping disaster risk management in Sri Lanka.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on 14 May. Interested participants are encouraged to register in advance at https://arcg.is/0b9bbL2.
