Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong defended China-funded projects, stating that they were developed at the request of previous Governments.
He noted that while some projects like the Colombo Lotus Tower faced inefficiencies, they are now profitable and serve as national symbols, further highlighting the positive impact of the Hambantota Port, Colombo Port, and Colombo Port City, which are fully funded by China.
Addressing concerns about Chinese loans, he clarified that these investments aim to support Sri Lanka's independence.
The Ambassador also explained the delay in the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), reaffirming that Sri Lanka could amend the agreement after one year if needed.
He conveyed China’s continued support for Sri Lanka during its economic and crisis challenges.
