A defect in the braking system has been observed in the vehicle of the former Speaker of the Parliament and incumbent National People’s Power (NPP) Government Parliamentarian Ashoka Ranwala which was involved in an accident on 11 December of this year (2025) in Sapugaskanda, the Police stated.
The medical report of Ranwala, who was involved in the accident in which at least three people sustained injuries, has not yet been received by the Police according to the Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police and attorney F.U. Wootler. Subsequent inquiries made from the Officer-in-Charge of the Sapugaskanda Police Station confirmed that the medical report has not yet been received by the Police. Wootler stated the Police have so far received only the vehicle inspection report relating to the accident involving Ranwala. Accordingly, the vehicle inspection report has indicated the vehicle driven by Ranwala was not properly maintained and there was a defect in the braking system. He noted that legal action against Ranwala would be determined after the medical report is received.
On 11 December night, the jeep driven by Ranwala collided with a car and a motorcycle in Denimulla, Sapugaskanda, resulting in injuries to Ranwala and three other persons (a 25-year-old woman, her six-months-old infant, and a 55-year-old mother) who were travelling in the other vehicle. They were subsequently hospitalised.
Ranwala, who was receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, was taken into Police custody on 12 December on charges of dangerous driving and failing to prevent an accident. He was subsequently granted bail by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on the same day, on a cash bail of Rs. 200,000.
Police further stated the blood samples of Ranwala have been forwarded to the Government Analyst for examination.
