The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) announced that a research report on water samples linked to the deaths of 25 animals in Colombo's Beira Lake will be submitted within three days.
The Head of NARA Environmental Studies Division, Shyamali Weerasekara, stated that further action will follow after the report is reviewed by the Ministry of Fisheries.
Colombo Municipal Council’s (CMC) Chief Veterinary Officer, Mohamed Ijas, confirmed that bird flu has been ruled out but could not verify claims about chemicals being the cause.
Out of the 25 animals, remains of 7 have been sent for testing at Homagama, with additional samples to be sent to Peradeniya.
The exact cause remains undetermined pending lab results.
