Intra-SLFP crisis: Sirisena faction to oppose Siripala faction

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) faction led by its former Chairperson, former President, and current Opposition Parliamentarian Maithripala Sirisena, is preparing to initiate legal action against the appointments made by the rival SLFP faction led by Acting SLFP Chairperson, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

An interim injunction issued by the Colombo District Court prevented Sirisena from functioning as the Party Chairperson, leading to a split within the SLFP, with one faction supporting Sirisena and the other, de Silva.

Former SLFP General Secretary and Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, recently told the media that the appointments and decisions made by both factions lack legality. He noted that while the de Silva faction has challenged nearly all appointments and decisions made by the Sirisena faction, the latter is yet to reciprocate.

When questioned by The Daily Morning about the matter, SLFP Senior Vice President Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa said that they were initially hoping for natural justice and public understanding of the truth. "We thought that the people would understand the truth and that this issue would resolve itself, but, that hasn't happened as we expected. Therefore, we have decided to go to court against them. Their appointments and occupation of the SLFP Headquarters are both illegal."

Amid the turmoil, the pro Sirisena faction elected incumbent Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, as the Party Chairperson. However, this appointment was contested in Court by the de Silva faction. In response, the Court issued an order preventing Dr. Rajapakshe from functioning as an SLFP member and the Chairperson.
