The Free Lawyers organisation has criticised the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigation into several political leaders and activists over alleged contempt of court.

The group includes Dilith Jayaweera, Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, along with Mahinda Pathirana, Asanka Nawaratne and Sugeeshwara Bandara.

The CID has informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court that an investigation has been initiated over statements linked to former SIS Director Suresh Sallay, who is currently in remand custody.

The Free Lawyers organisation has noted concerns over the investigation and the application of contempt-related provisions under the Contempt of Court Act No. 8 of 2024.
