Shangri-La’s Tiki Bar finds a new rhythm

03 May 2026 | By Naveed Rozais

There is a certain moment in Colombo when the day loosens its grip and the city begins to soften.

At Shangri-La Colombo, Tiki Bar has always sat comfortably within that transition, with the hotel now naming that time the Golden Hour and revamping the bar to optimise the experience.

With its recent relaunch, the space feels more assured, less about spectacle and more about experience. And at the centre of that shift is the menu.

A menu built around fire and spice

The new food offering leans clearly into Indian influences, with a strong emphasis on tandoor and kebabs.

It is a direction that works well in a setting like this. The food is designed to be shared, to sit easily alongside drinks, and to carry enough flavour to hold its own without overwhelming the table.

The lamb chops are a firm favourite and carry a depth of flavour that is hard to miss – robust, well seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The balance is right, the texture is clean, and each bite carries through with consistency.

The mutton kebab follows closely. It is rich without feeling heavy, and the seasoning is handled with restraint. There is a sense that the kitchen understands the line between bold and excessive, and chooses carefully where to sit.

Seafood holds its ground as well. The fish, simply prepared, is fresh and light, allowing the natural flavour to come through while still carrying the spice profile of the menu. It is the kind of dish that works quietly, without needing to draw too much attention to itself.

One of the more surprising elements is the cauliflower in white masala. It is easily overlooked on paper, but on the plate it delivers. The flavours are layered but controlled, and the dish carries a warmth that lingers without becoming too heavy. It is one of those additions that rounds out the menu rather than competing with it.

Drinks that hold their own

Alongside the food, the beverage programme has been reworked with a similar level of intent. The cocktails lean towards fresh fruit, lighter profiles, and visual appeal, but without losing structure.

There is a sense of play here, but it is grounded. The drinks feel considered, not decorative. They sit comfortably next to the food, complementing rather than distracting, and offer enough variety to keep the experience moving.

What the relaunch ultimately achieves is clarity. Tiki Bar is no longer trying to be everything at once. It understands its role within the city’s rhythm.

The menu reflects that. It is focused, confident, and built around flavour. The food is strong across the board, with enough standouts to carry repeat visits. The drinks add to that experience rather than competing with it.

By the time the evening settles in and the tables fill, there is a quiet sense that the space has found its footing again – not through reinvention, but through refinement.
