In a move aimed at ensuring the development, independence, and transparency of cricket in Sri Lanka, Minister of Sports Roshan Ranasinghe has formed a three-member International Sports Coordination Committee for Cricket.
The committee, consisting of former Sri Lankan cricketer Sidath Wettimuny, former President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Upali Dharmadasa, and Legal Counsel Rakitha Rajapakshe, son of Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, is tasked with monitoring, communicating, and coordinating with both international and national cricket councils, federations, and institutes. According to the Ministry of Sports, their mission is to safeguard the integrity and progress of cricket within Sri Lanka while providing valuable advice to the Minister of Sports. The committee's formation comes as a response to concerns about the governance of cricket in the country.
However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has declined to engage with this ‘Government-appointed committee’. The ICC has made it clear that they will only meet with the SLC board and will not engage with anybody appointed by the Government. In a letter addressed to Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice emphasised the expectation that SLC should manage its operations independently. The ICC stresses that there should be no interference from the Government or any other public or quasi-public body in the governance, regulation, and administration of cricket within the nation.
