Fatal Meegoda accident driver was DUI

Police have confirmed the driver of the cab involved in the accident where six persons, including three females, were reported dead while several others were injured after a vehicle crashed into a crowd of people near a Vesak Dansala in the Meegoda Junction, was under the influence of alcohol.

The driver of the cab has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run incident. The arrested suspect has been identified as a 42-year-old resident of the Piliyandala area.

The driver of the cab involved in the fatal accident at the Meegoda junction where six persons were killed, has since been remanded until 16 June. The order was issued by the Homagama Magistrate’s Court. 

At least 13 persons were injured and admitted to the Homagama Base Hospital while six of them, including three females, had succumbed to injuries, according to Hospital sources. The deceased include three women aged 15, 32, and 56, and three men aged 35, 38, and 58. Seven others, including a young child, sustained injuries and were admitted to the Hospital for treatment. 

A cab traveling on the road in the Meegoda area in Homagama had veered off the road and crashed into a crowd gathered in a line near a Vesak Dansala, on 31 May night, before fleeing the scene.
