Sri Lanka Police introduce video call facility for hearing-impaired community

08 Sep 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Sri Lanka Police has introduced a special facility allowing members of the hearing-impaired community to lodge complaints with the 119 Police Emergency Call Unit through WhatsApp video calls.

The initiative, launched by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on 3 September, will officially commence on 10 September as part of programmes marking the 160th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police.

Until a dedicated short-code number is introduced, users can access the service by making a WhatsApp audio call to 011 280 9980. A link will then be sent to the caller to join a video meeting and communicate their complaint.

Police have requested the public to make members of the hearing-impaired community aware of the new service.
