Thousands of fish in Kelani River dying

23 Mar 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Residents living near the Ambatale water treatment plant have reported a troubling phenomenon: thousands of fish have been dying in the Kelani river over the past several days.

Local residents observed large numbers of dead fish floating on the surface of the river, raising concerns about environmental pollution and its potential impact on the water treatment process.

They have stated that they immediately informed the Pradeshiya Sabha, the Central Environmental Authority, and the National Aquatic Resources Agency (NARA) about the situation.

The residents emphasised the need for a thorough inspection to determine the cause of the fish deaths and to assess any possible adverse effects on the water quality and treatment operations.

They expressed hope that the relevant authorities would act swiftly to investigate the environmental pollution and identify the source of the problem.
